Linotype 202 hack at Bell Labs

I've come across a wonderful story that has happened a long time ago at Bell labs. They basically bought a Linotype typesetting machine shortly before the arrival of laser printers. After they realized that Linotype would not provide them with information how to create their own fonts for the device they started to disassemble the whole software and recreate it from scratch. They succeeded but the technical report they wrote could not get published due to serious concerns by their lawyers. A long time after the engineers recreated the technical report and documented the process of creating it as well.
